Percee P , i salute you.

this is a special entry to me. every so often im gunna do a "i salute you" entry. looks like the rhyme inspector is the first. now percee p has been around FOREVER! hes like the emcees emcee. i dont know if its his work ethic that lacks but he juss released his 1st! studio album under stones throw records last year. the dude has been rappin since easily the mid to early 80's! the thing with percee p is juss his flow, straight up! i remember when i first heard him i thought he was juss a rip off of early 90's kool g rap. but then i started to collect more and more tracks from him and knoticed that these were pretty old! pre dating kool g rap and easily waaay befor big pun. the album im gunna post is called "legendary status" its juss a collection of his tracks through the 80's to the new millinum. everyone that i have introduced percee p to have dug it. if its from the rapid fire flow or juss those oldschool funky ass beats. now granted NOT all the tracks on this RAR is 10 outta 10. there are a few he did, weather its shotty production or shitty guest apperences. its usally him the guest and he pretty much shits on whos ever track he's on. it may sound like i got a boner for percee p, but those how know. they will easily tell ya percee p will put your favorite rapper to shame! PERCEE P YOU GET MY SALUTE!

ALL TIME FAV!

Before The Music Dies

this is a documentary about how today's music industry is fucked up! there are a lot of big names in this movie and they give insight on how the record company used to be compared to now. Now at some point i felt like it was a bunch of old timers juss complaing about how its not the same as in their day. TRUE. but they did have some very good point. Stevie Wonder would NEVER make it in todays market. its undisputed that hes one in a million but for the sole purpose that hes blind the media would look down @ it and never be a pop act. In a way i like it that the record industries are in a state of choas. Its making people wake up and realize that shit is fucked up and forcing people to come up with new and inovative ways to be seen and heard. blogs like these dont hurt either! im not a muscian by any means, i dont even think i can hold a tune. but i am a music lover and i watch and study the pop culture of music, mainly hip hop and how its pretty much a circus. so if ya wanna check out a movie on people and muscians of all kinds trying to figure out a way to change. this is for you!

Grant Green - Green is Beautiful -1970

juss finished listenin to this album again. this was during the middle of his career and juss churing out albums for blue note. this is a pretty short album with only 5 tracks but the first 2 are both over 9mn long. there are some good covers in this album aswell. you will reconize grant greens interpetation of the beatles "a day in the life" in wich he takes it down his own path and then brings it back in a cohesive manner. its a pretty mello album with lotsa hammond organs and some jazzy/soulfull guitar. therse alotta soulstruttin goin on in this one. this would make a great background music for a cool chill party. have fun with this one!

R.E.M- CHRONIC TOWN- 1982

So as i type this im in the middle of listening to this gem. I remember almost 15 years ago my close friend justin introduced me to this tape. This was when Rem was gettin REALLY big. i was young and didnt mind rem, mainly cause they were on the radio and i didnt really know much better. BUT! this tape always stuck out to me! i dunno if justin hs any idea on the impact that he did when he got me to listen to this. cause after it was done i imeditly rewound the tape and played it from front to back again. I musta listened to this 5 times in a row. Before he left i had to have this tape. he wasnt gunna let me borrow it so i remember looking for a blank tape but couldnt find any. so i juss hit up my dads tapes. remeber on non recorable tapes you could by-pass that and record on them if you juss put 2 small pieces of tape and coverd the corners? so i did that to a travelling willburrys tape im pretty sure! this album is short but all that sweet! i hope ya enjoy this one!

Heavy Heavy Heavy- Geraldo Pino

I hope y’all are ready to groove, because the tune that I am about to whip on you today is, quite literally, figuratively and in title, Heavy Heavy Heavy.
That I had some Afro funk ready to go when this opportunity rolled along is pure, happy coincidence.
When you talk about Afro funk (beat, rock, whatever) the name that first comes to mind is of course that of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Unless you have a more than passing acquaintance with sounds African, you may not have heard the name Geraldo Pino. Rest assured, though, that in the earliest days of his funkiness, Fela knew Pino – a native of Sierra Leone who was very popular in Nigeria – and his band the Heartbeats as perhaps the funkiest band in all of Africa.
Pino – born Gerald Pine – started out as a devotee of Latin sounds, moving on into American influenced soul and funk via the influence of James Brown. In the words of Fela himself:

“They were great, I must be frank with you. They copied James Brown throughin, throughout every note, every style. And they had the equipment…Before they came into my country, bands only used one microphone, at the time a whole band. But they came in with five microphones, and the sound, it’s deep you know, so nobody wanted to hear anyone but the Heartbeats…they drove everyone out of the market.”

After seeing this Pino I knew I had to get myself together, quick!”*

When you hear today’s selection, ‘Heavy Heavy Heavy’, which was recorded in the late 60’s and released clear on the other side of the continent in Kenya on the Suzumi label, it’s immediately obvious why Fela dug these sounds so much.
There are clear parallels to the sounds of Fela – especially to the ’69 sessions with Koola Lobitos – but Pino’s sound is even more Westernized, compacting the funk into smaller, harder portions. A record like ‘Heavy Heavy Heavy’ is like Fela concentrate, taking the epic scope of an Africa 70 sidelong opus, running it through a Sex Machine and coming out the other end ready to set the dance floor on fire.
‘Heavy Heavy Heavy’ has a groove that’s positively unfuckwithable, with Pino jiving over a seriously propulsive organ line and some pounding drums. If you aren’t shaking your ass halfway through this burner, you need to check for a pulse.

Byron Lee & the Dragonaires - Shaft

The tune I bring you today sees Mr Lee covering one of the best known tracks from the catalog of a certain Mr Hayes (Isaac, to be exact). Byron and the band take the track at a relaxed pace –which I dig – working that familiar riff over a reggae groove.

The Archive

this is a pretty good mini movie about the guy that owns the worlds biggest record collection.
his name is Paul Mawhinney and he has around 2.5 million records. i would probably shit my pants if i was to go in there. it seems like it would almost be a little intimdating, seeing that there is so much. i wouldnt know where to start! but i do have a question for this guy.
DID YOU NOT THINK OF THE FUTURE! i mean if its your lifes work then surley you would think ahead and make sure they were goin to be taken care of!

Show Biz & A.G.- Runaway Slave 1992

The effort was a highly praised underground release, but didn't sell strong numbers. Three songs from their debut EP are included here, "Party Groove", "Soul Clap", and "Catchin' Wreck".

The album features an early appearance from late legend Big L, on the posse cut "Represent", other guest appearances come from Diamond D, Dres, Lord Finesse and DeShawn. The album includes many interludes between songs that features underground artists such as The Legion, Freddie Foxxx, Fat Joe, Kid Capri and Lord Finesse.

Producer Showbiz makes frequent rapping appearance on the album, unlike later releases, where he left the rhyming to A.G

this isnt my favorite show and a.g. albums but it does stand out as a classic album. the production is mostly handled by showbiz. you can tell he was really diggin through alotta old jazz records at the time cause most of the beats have some element of funky jazz. to some this album may seem dated production wise but i find it refreshing change.

The Cube-1969

this is one of my favorite movies of all time. this is the original and its done wonderfully. its a weird movie but thats what gives it its charm. its about this guy thats stuck in this cube and has no idea why hes there or how he got there. as the movie progresses things juss start to get weirder and weirder makin you think maybe its him thats insane all along. they put him through alotta shit through this movie and it seems like a psychlogical hell. so if ya have time i highley recomend this movie. but remeber this isnt a fast paced action movie. its a psychlogical weird movie. hope ya enjoy!

Hung Up On My Baby- Issac Hayes and My Mind Is Playing Tricks On Me- Geto Boys

so this is basically the origanal and the sampled version. im not to sure wich version i like better. if i had to pick i think i would go with the geto boys and ONLY because i grew up listinig to this track. i know i would get alotta flak from that, but i was juss to young to care about Issac Hayes. A lot has changed since. im pretty sure that scarface sampled and produced the track, but i can be wrong. anyways heres both tracks.

My mind is playing tricks on me- Geto Boys

oh ya, on a side note. this track is all about paranoia. hence my mind is playin is playin tracks on me. that scarface lyric is pretty stong!
I often drift while I drive
Havin fatal thoughts of suicide
BANG and get it over with
And then I'm worry-free, but that's bullshit
I got a little boy to look after
And if I died then my child would be a bastard

Janko Nilovic - Flock

i dont really know much about this dude. i know that he can play some serious vibes, if ya listen to the track you will see too. this track is pretty short comin in @ 1:23 but its the type of track that once ya listen to ya play it over again. oh ya if yr a beat head check out the sweet break beat @ the .44 second mark.
HOLLA!

R.I.P Party Arty

Since ive basically juss started this blog, i never got so mention the passing of a m.c. that i thought was dope. First time i heard Party Arty was on the track "Da Graveyard" off of Big L's first album Life stylez of da poor and dangerous. He had some SERIOUS competion on that track wich consisted of Big L, Lord Finnesse, Microphone Nut a then relitivtly unknown rapper Jay-z and Y.U
The thing that i first noticed bout Party Arty was his gruff voice. When i used to check for Fat Joe back in the day i would always hear him and Arty shoutin out the crew "Ghetto dwellas" i never did hear his partner D-flow as much as Arty, maybe cause his voice stuck out. When i heard he passed i thought of the D.I.T.C crew. So in short, heres to you Party Arty. You will be missed.

Heres the 1st time i heard Party Arty. For those who know, this track is solid.

But not to let him go with out blessin ya with this gem. I have no idea what sample was used in this track but hot damn its smooth.

Going in Circles- The Friends of Distinction

THIS TRACK HAS GOT SOUL BY THE POUND!
Going in Circles
is a song written by Jerry Peters and Anita Poree, and originally performed by The Friends of Distinction on their 1969 album Grazin′, reaching #15 on the U.S. Pop chart, and #3 on the R&B chart. The song has since been covered numerous times by other artists.

James Brown- King Heroin

This is my favorite track from James Brown of all time. produced in 1974 from the album "there it is" One of his social tracks that tackles heroin. Before the huge crack epidemic of the 80's heroin was the choice drug. hot damn is this a powerful track.
i miss you Mr. Brown

heres one from Marcos Valle. i have no idea what hes singin bout, but i could care less sounds pretty nice on the ears.

Tamba Trio - Tamba Trio (1974)

zecalouro have been with many Tamba Trios LPs and was almost used with the easy-listening professional jazz ensemble delivered by Luiz Eça and his crew. Tamba Trio - Tamba Trio (1974) is the exception. This record shows many different places, from some electronics, SambaJazz, Batucada, etc.

Surprise. Perhaps almost unknown by many friends at Loronix. This is a work of a serious Jazz Band.

This cover edition is sponsored by Varig Airlines that gave this album as a gift to their DC-10 passengers. Good times that will never go back again. Be happy if you get today a couple of peanuts with orange juice...

Tracks include:
